Hey I’m Gillian Davis or Gilly D (as I go by on my radio show. I am a senior at Cabrini College majoring in communications focusing on media production. I have recently returned from a semester abroad in London, England, where I studied music sociology as well as the anatomy of the music industry. While in abroad, I had the opportunity to travel all over Europe and experience the wild world we live in.
At WYBF, I have been given the opportunity to be the Music Director for the station. My job consists of reviewing new album releases, contacting record labels for new music and sharing it with the WYBF community. Personally, I think it’s the best position at WYBF!
Music has always been a passion in my life. It started at young age listening to The Beatles with my Mom and exploring my Dad’s records in the basement. There I discovered I loved The Eagles, Queen, Johnny Cash and Cream but couldn’t wrap my head around Kiss. Still can’t.
I am still listening to all the bands mentioned above today but have advanced my musical taste to include alternative, indie and rock. Some of my favorite bands include Bon Iver, Los Campensinos, The Strokes, Lykke Li, Animal Collective, etc. I’m a big sucker for John Mayer too.
I was fortunate to intern with 95.5 WPLJ in New York City. I was a promotional intern and worked in a major radio station. This great experience allowed me to observe how intense radio and city life is. As an intern, my job was to go around NYC and distribute t-shirts, key chains and other chotchkes. I was able to go to many concerts and events I would have never been able to if I did not apply for the internship. It was truly a worthwhile and valuable experience.
I have also been very involved outside of radio. I have been a part of Cabrini’s newspaper, the Loquitur, as a writer and assistant arts & entertainment editor. Currently, I am working on a multimedia website focusing on the awareness of domestic violence and the effects on the family. I am also in the process of learning how to mix/mash-up/create music in the Digital Audio production class.
Besides music and school, my life consists of hanging out with my friends, looking for adventure, travelling and having a great time. |
